Hi, I’m Ryan McElrath, a Minneapolis-based ceramic artist specializing in tape-resist design. I make uplifting pottery inspired by geometric symmetry that’s meant for everyday use and special occasions, from the coffee cup you reach for each morning to one-of-a-kind gifts.
My pieces are designed to stand out. Pottery is organic and unpredictable. I see that as a fun challenge. My detailed, precise work is a fun and unique juxtaposition in that it’s the opposite. And that’s what excites me. There’s this feeling that you feel when you see something interesting, when your brain is engaged and stimulated. I want you to feel that when you look at my pieces.
I have spent 16 years developing a strong foundation in wheel-thrown pottery. More recently, glaze decoration has become my focus. I love tape- resist method in particular because of the control I have over the glaze. Using a highly flexible vinyl tape, I apply patterns to the surface of unglazed, bisque-fired vessels. The tape is ideal for manipulation; it can be twisted, pulled, and positioned precisely to match the design I’ve created. I carefully measure and sketch each piece into segments, creating a geometric framework to guide the taping process. Once the tape is applied, I glaze the piece and then remove the tape, revealing the resist beneath. On average, I spend ten to twelve hours taping a single vase.
This collection has been years in the making and I’m excited to share it with you. Selling has always been a pipe dream and it’s exciting and nerve racking to make this a reality! Thank you for being a part of the journey. This is just the beginning.
